A practical cross-reference for 9, 17, and 26 series TIG torches: what interchanges, what does not, and how to pick consumables without guessing.
Quick answer
The 9, 17, and 26 series are three different torch body sizes, not three versions of the same torch. If you weld thin material and want a small, light head, the 9 series is the usual pick. If you need one air-cooled torch that covers most general fabrication, the 17 series is the middle ground. If you run higher amperage for longer, the 26 series is the larger air-cooled body. The practical rule: match the consumable to the torch series first, then match the torch series to your amperage and cable setup.
What actually changes between 9, 17, and 26 series torches
The series number describes the torch head and body size, which sets the consumable family, the amperage class, and how the torch connects to its cable. A 9 series torch is the smallest of the three and uses its own compact consumables. A 17 series torch is the mid-size air-cooled body and uses the widely available 17 series consumables. A 26 series torch is the largest air-cooled body in this group and uses 26 series consumables.

The most common mistake is assuming that because a collet or cup threads in, it is correct. Thread pitch and gas lens geometry differ between series, so a part that fits loosely or bottoms out early is usually the wrong series, not a defective part. When you cross-reference, check three things: the torch series, the consumable family, and the connection type on the cable end.

How the consumables cross-reference in practice
Collets, collet bodies, gas lenses, cups, heat shields, and back caps are generally series-specific. A 17 series collet body belongs in a 17 series torch, and a 26 series torch takes 26 series parts. The exception worth knowing is cup fit: a 1/16 inch stubby gas lens kit is made to put a 9/20 series alumina cup onto any 17, 18, or 26 series TIG torch. That is a deliberate cross-fit, not a universal rule, and it is one of the few places where a smaller cup family is used on a larger torch body.
Torch heads and cables are a separate compatibility layer. The 17 series TIG torch head fits TIG torch cables with 3/8-24 male fittings, which is the industry standard, and it is available with rigid necks, rigid necks with a valve in the torch head, flex necks, and flex necks with a valve in the torch head. That means you can change neck style or add a valve without changing the cable, as long as the cable uses the 3/8-24 male fitting.
Power cables follow their own series rules. A super-flex power cable for 9 and 17 series air-cooled TIG torches uses a 3/8-24 RH male connection on both ends and is available in 12.5 foot and 25 foot lengths. Because it is made from silicone rubber with a nylon braided weave overlay, it stays flexible in cold weather and puts less strain on your wrist, which makes the torch feel lighter. It is not a 26 series cable, so do not assume it will replace a 26 series power cable.
Amperage class and the water-cooled exception
Series size tracks amperage class, but the catalog does not list a single amperage number for every torch, and you should not invent one. Use the series as a relative guide: 9 series is the light-duty end, 17 series is the general-purpose middle, and 26 series is the heavier air-cooled end. For actual duty, follow the rating published for your specific torch and your duty cycle.
Water cooling changes the picture. An 18 series (350A) Trim Line water-cooled TIG torch is a different body from the 9, 17, and 26 air-cooled torches, and it requires a water cooler with 9mm quick connect fittings. It includes a 35 Dinse (1/2 inch) power connection, a 9mm gas connection, and 9mm quick connect/disconnect water connections, and it is available with a standard rigid neck or a flex neck in 12.5 foot and 25 foot lengths. If you are comparing a 17 series air-cooled torch to an 18 series water-cooled torch, you are comparing two different cooling systems, not two sizes of the same torch.
Trade-offs when you cross-reference series
- Small body vs. amperage headroom: A 9 series torch is easier to maneuver in tight joints, but it is the light-duty end of the group. A 17 or 26 series body gives you more amperage class at the cost of a larger, heavier head. Choose the smallest series that covers your real amperage and duty cycle, not the smallest one that fits the joint.
- Consumable commonality vs. exact fit: 17 series consumables are the most widely stocked of the three, while 9 and 26 series parts are more specific. The 1/16 inch stubby gas lens kit is an intentional cross-fit that puts a 9/20 series cup on a 17, 18, or 26 series torch. Buy consumables by series, and treat cross-fits as listed exceptions rather than a general rule.
- Air-cooled vs. water-cooled: Air-cooled 9, 17, and 26 series torches use their own cables and consumables. A water-cooled 18 series torch needs a cooler with 9mm quick connect fittings and uses a 35 Dinse power connection, so its parts do not swap onto an air-cooled torch. Decide cooling method before you buy consumables; it changes every connection on the torch.
Parts that show the compatibility rules
- 17 Series TIG Torch Head: 17 Series TIG torch head fits TIG torch cables with 3/8-24 male fittings (the industry standard) and is available in rigid, rigid with valve, flex, and flex with valve versions. If your cable already uses the 3/8-24 male fitting, you can change neck style or add a torch-head valve without buying a new cable.
- Super-Flex Power Cable for 9 & 17 Series Air-Cooled TIG Torches: Super-Flex power cable for 9 and 17 series air-cooled TIG torches has 3/8-24 RH male connections on both ends and is available in 12.5 foot and 25 foot lengths, made from silicone rubber with a nylon braided weave overlay. It is a direct fit for 9 and 17 series air-cooled torches, and the braided silicone construction keeps the cable flexible in cold weather and reduces wrist strain.
- 1/16" Stubby Gas Lens Kit f/17, 18, & 26 Series TIG Torches: 1/16 inch stubby gas lens kit lets you put a 9/20 series alumina cup onto any 17, 18, or 26 series TIG torch, and includes a 1/16 inch collet, gas lens collet body, #6 alumina cup, heat shield, and medium back cap. This is a real cross-series fit: it shortens the torch head so you can reach tight spaces on a 17, 18, or 26 series torch without switching to a 9 series body.
- 18 Series (350A) Trim Line Water-Cooled Torch for Everlast® PowerTig 250EX, 315LX, 400EXT,Typhoon 500 & 800: 18 Series (350A) Trim Line water-cooled TIG torch is for Everlast PowerTig 250EX, 315LX, 400EXT, Typhoon 500 and 800 welders and needs a water cooler with 9mm quick connect fittings; it includes a 35 Dinse (1/2 inch) power connection, 9mm gas connection, and 9mm quick connect/disconnect water connections. This is a water-cooled system with its own connections, so it does not interchange with the 9, 17, or 26 series air-cooled torch cables or consumables.
Which series fits your work
Best for
- Thin-gauge and detail work where a small, light 9 series torch head reaches tight joints
- General fabrication where a 17 series air-cooled torch with 3/8-24 cable fittings covers most jobs
- Higher-amperage air-cooled work where a 26 series body is the better match
- Tight-space work on a 17, 18, or 26 series torch using the 1/16 inch stubby gas lens kit
Not for
- Anyone expecting 9, 17, and 26 series consumables to interchange freely; they do not
- Air-cooled torch owners looking for a direct swap to an 18 series water-cooled torch without a compatible cooler and connections
- Buyers who have not confirmed the cable-end fitting on their torch before ordering a replacement head or power cable
